Build Muscle Fast! Lose pounds!

I can’t do em on the chairs I have, it kills the palms on my hands they are all rugged. Even when I wear gloves it kills. Is there any other way to do these? My grandfather taught me a long time ago (He was some muscle man most of his life) some sort of dip where you put your hands slightly behind your back on the seat of the chair – then you straighten your legs out forward as far as you can – then you dip your ass to the ground and lift back up. Is it the same thing?
