Can you really build muscle and burn fat at the same time? Or is it only reserved for boys and girls drugs? I know, I know, all these incredible before and after pictures in the ads, right? But how are they real?
In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (58:561-565), Muscle hypertrophy with large-scale loss of weight and resistance training, subjects took the fat while gaining muscle.
Fourteen women followed a calorie 800, high protein diet (80 grams protein, 97 grams carbohydrates and 10 grams of fat) – with seven of the women to lift weights for 30-40 minutes three times a week and seven other women simply following the diet without exercise.
The study lasted 90 days and the workout consisted of bench presses, pulldowns, presses military sweaters, curls, tricep extensions, knee extensions, and knee flexion.
Both groups lost the same amount of weight – about 33 pounds. The group lifting however, actually increased the muscle mass of 21-27 percent, while non-waiver group lost muscle with fat.

The key to successful weight loss is weight training – does not work, or any other low intensity cardio program – and a diet rich in protein. In the study, 40 percent of calories from protein, as opposed to the loss of most of the fat diets that require protein as 15-20 percent.
Now we'll get a few things straight. This is not an endorsement of the severe calorie restriction. Even if you get results first, eventually your body will rebel with a lower metabolism, muscle loss and fat accumulation.
However, it does show you that when you properly apply the fundamentals of proper weight training and nutrition, you can build muscles while you burn fat and completely reshape your body.
